Foilyage montreal

What is Foilyage

You may have seen the hashtag #foilyage on Instagram or in your favorite hair salon’s social media posts, but what exactly is foilyage? Is it a new type of highlights? A new hair color trend? Keep reading to find out!

Foilyage is a highlighting technique that combines traditional foil highlights with balayage. Balayage is a French word meaning “to sweep” – it’s a technique where color is painted on the hair freehand, without using foils. This results in a more natural-looking highlight.

Foilyage is perfect for those who want the best of both worlds – the added dimension of balayage, with the precise placement of traditional foil highlights. Read on to learn more about this technique and how to get foilyage at our Montreal salon!

How is Foilyage Done?

Foilyage starts with small sections of the hair being isolated with plastic wrap or strips of foil. The colorist then hand-paints lightener or color onto these sections (just like they would with balayage) before wrapping them up in foil. Once all the sections have been wrapped, the colorist will undergo what’s called the “open and slide” process. This involves opening up each section of foil, sliding the foil down slightly, and then re-sealing it. This ensures that every strand of hair is evenly coated in color or lightener.

After the desired amount of time has passed, the foils are removed and the colorist evaluates the results. They may decide to do a second round of foiling if they feel like more time is needed to reach the desired level of lift (lightening). Once they’re happy with the results, they’ll shampoo and condition your hair as usual.

At our Montreal salon, we offer both traditional highlights and foiled balayage. We always consult with our clients beforehand to figure out which technique would be best for their hair type and goals. If you’re interested in trying foilyage, book an appointment at our salon today!
